Natalie Tkachuk’s recent body of work ‘Traces’ consists of images of old books and letters. Taken from house clearances they represent lost and forgotten traces of memory and time. They are artifacts left by strangers, snippets of life lost. The images suggest an absence and a presence, the absence of the owner and their presence as a photographic object. Tkachuk feels the power of her work lies in what is not revealed, allowing the viewer to use their own experiences to relate to them. Her photographic approach is based on a high gloss appearance, movement and time is captured like a fashion shoot.
‘Archived Miscellanea’ is a study of obsolete items that no longer have a use; they have been throw
away and discarded. These items have been collected and categorised, and these once useful items have been
given the importance and significance of something museum worthy.
Many of these items are not familiar and recognizable, they are unidentified. They are not given a description as it is like a puzzle, it is only someone that has a passion or love of that objects use will know of the item, these items have secrets.
This ongoing series is a record of useless items, based on traditional factual photography as a way of recording and archiving findings and discoveries.
Both Archival ‘Miscellanea’ and ‘Traces’ are available as a series of images, either individually or as a group. Please contact the gallery for images of the whole series.
